50 First Dance Songs And How To Choose One

Choosing a song for your first dance may not be at the top of your wedding planning list but definitely something you will have to give some thought to if you are planning to honour this tradition. There are SO many to choose from and unless you already know what you want, it can be difficult to narrow it down to the perfect song.

Weddings can be pretty hectic and the first dance is a lovely intimate moment between the newly married couple, a chance for you both to catch your breath and just be together for a few minutes. It’s also a signal for your guests that the party has started and it’s time to get their dancing shoes on (or kick their shoes off).

Whether you want to wow your guests with a quirky choreographed number, spin around the dance floor like a contestant on ‘Strictly’ or just shuffle round in a circle like the rest of us, the right music is essential.

If you and your partner have ‘a song’ then this would be the obvious choice. It’s a song you both love and means something to you so makes perfect sense that you would play this when dancing together for the first time as a married couple. If you don’t have ‘a song’, because let’s face it not all couples do, start by making a list of your favourite songs. Is there a song that reminds you of a special time or place? How about one from a favourite film or TV show? It could be a song that was playing when you first met or was popular at that time or just one where the lyrics really resonate with you both. Start listening to songs and see if anything jumps out at you, it doesn’t have to be lovey dovey, it can be funny, even if you are the only two people in the room who get the joke (in fact, even better if it is!)

To get you started, I’ve put together a list of 50 of my favourites (in no particular order), it’s fairly mixed so there should be something for everyone. I’d love to know your suggestions too.
